Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale and solid sterling silver is a soft, living metal. Looked after simply, a HerMoment piece stays bright for decades. Here is everything, in plain language.
Every day
- Put it on last, take it off first. Perfume, hairspray, fake tan, sunscreen and body lotion all dull the finish. Let them dry before the jewellery goes on.
- Wipe it when you take it off. The polishing cloth in your box lifts the day's oils. Ten seconds is enough.
- Store it in its case. Air, humidity and other jewellery are what scratch and tarnish silver. The lidded case is the safest place for it.
Water
- Shower and rain are fine. Clean water does not hurt the stone or the metal.
- Pools and the ocean are not. Chlorine and salt attack the finish and, over time, the plating. Take it off.
- Hot tubs and spas are the worst of the three. Heat plus chlorine works faster than either alone.
Cleaning at home
- Warm water, a drop of plain dish soap, and a soft toothbrush.
- Brush gently behind the stone as well as in front. Most of the dullness people see is film on the back of the stone, not the front.
- Rinse in clean water, then dry completely with a soft cloth before it goes back in the case.
Never use bleach, ammonia, toothpaste, baking soda or a silver dip on a set stone. They strip plating and can loosen a setting.
Ultrasonic and steam cleaners
Moissanite handles ultrasonic cleaning well. Pearls, plated pieces and anything glued rather than set do not. If your piece includes a pearl or is gold plated, clean it by hand only.
Silver that has darkened
Sterling silver darkens slowly when it sits unworn. That is normal, it is not a fault, and it reverses. The polishing cloth in your box will bring it back. If it has gone a long way, send it to us and we will re-polish and re-finish it.
Gold plated pieces
Plating is a surface, so it wears with friction rather than time. Rings and bracelets wear faster than necklaces and earrings because hands touch everything. Keep it away from cleaning products and perfume, and it will hold its colour for years.
Chains and clasps
- Undo the clasp to take a necklace off rather than pulling it over your head. Most broken chains break that way.
- Lay a chain flat in its case rather than coiling it, and it will not knot.
- If a clasp starts to feel loose, stop wearing it and send it to us. A loose clasp is a lost necklace.
What we will do for you
We will re-polish and re-finish any HerMoment piece for as long as you own it. Send it in and we will return it looking like new. Postage to us is at your cost, and we cover the postage back.
Tarnish, plating wear and scratches from ordinary use are care rather than faults, so they are not warranty claims. Faults in materials or workmanship are covered by the Unlimited Brilliance Warranty, and if the stone is ever lost from its setting we replace it.
